Wishing You All Joy

I have finally finished wrapping and stuffing stockings, and fixing my lj from its disastrous unasked for, unheralded, sudden change from a three column style to a two column style, and now I have a moment to stop, gather my thoughts and speak to you all.

not_a_zatarc and rgcraeg, I wish you both a belated happy birthday. I hope that everything came in actual birthday wrapping, and not slightly anticipatory Christmas wrapping, and that you each had a whale of a day.

And to all and sundry I wish a very lovely holiday, whichever one you happen to celebrate. The solstice is past, and for those of us up here in the northern climes, the long slow climb back into the light has begun, and for those of you in the summer hemisphere, the days will draw down. This process is a source of continual fascination to my Whirlwind, who asks frequently about what people would be doing on the other side of the world, and what time of year it is for people in the Southern Hemisphere. So I'm reminded fairly regularly that for some of you the Christmas season is cheek-by-jowl with your Midsummer's Eve.

We're culturally Christian here, which means there will be stockings and presents (my Muslim stepfather learned to play along years ago) and the singing of Christmas carols. And because in my family Christmas is a matriarchal holiday, we are all down here at my mothers, and there are siblings and nieces and nephew to visit with and enjoy.

The Whirlwind is still a True Believer, but is worried because due to the damage in the wake of tropical storm Irene, Santa was not at his local venue this year, and she wasn't able to sit in the great man's lap and tell him personally of all her nine year old desires and hopes. She's a little concerned that he won't get her anything as a result. After the holiday is safely done for the year, and the chances of her contaminating her cousins with apostasy is over, I'm going to have to have a little word with her. Nine is old enough. I've only put off having this chat because I didn't want her disillusioning any of her True Believer classmates, but this is getting silly.

In the meantime I told her about the year I was six and living in Greece, and very concerned because a)our 5th floor apartment had no fireplace, and b)I wasn't at all sure that he had my forwarding address. He managed to find me anyway.

So whether you celebrate Christmas, the Solstice, Hanukkah, Kwanza, or any of a host of other festivals, whether you are coming into winter or summer, as this year draws to an end, I hope you are all with the people you love, that you have joy and hope, that the walls that surround you ring with laughter and delight, and that the year to come will be better still. You have all brightened my life and I carry the pieces of you that you have shared with me through every day. I think of you all more often than you would think, and wish only the best for each and every one of you.

And so to bed!

Joyous Holidays to you and your family! I'm glad to hear that you're getting to spend time with so much of your extended family and I hope it's all wonderful :)

It has been, and the Whirlwind found out that Santa knows what she really wants, even though it wasn't what she planned to ask him for, because what she got was better.

It's always a great time when I can have all 4 kids under one roof again, and this year we've managed to do it 4 times, which is some kind of a record for recent years, so that has been wonderful!

We had the responsibility for Christmas dinner this year, and we had a Thai shrimp curry garnished with plenty of fresh cilantro, asparagus, spinach soup, Indian carrot rice, swiss chard, and guacamole. Considering we were only assigned the job the day before, and had to fight the last-minute shoppers at the grocery store, we felt pretty pleased at how it all came together, especially since the original plan was lamb, but the lamb available was nothing I would have wanted to serve to someone I love! My eldest, who can't have much shrimp due to an allergy, said she got up from the table well fed and satisfied, so we felt that was a success!

happy holidays to you too! and lol, so cute about the whirlwind and santa! I hope he managed to find her this year :)

Santa managed to find her, and bring her a gratifying amount of loot, including mechanical pencils, and holiday themed erasers (both of which were gifts from another - it didn't even occur to me, though it should have!) which thrilled her no end, because such things are a status item in her third grade classroom.

So we racked up another of those perfect childhood Christmases for her, the ones that make adult Christmases so anemic by comparison!

Beloved husband and I had a lovely Christmas because we got to take a walk together unaccompanied and, having drawn Christmas dinner responsibility this year, our dinner was very well received, and we could relax, leave the dishes to others, kick back, and bask in the glow of success.

Your LJ is different! :U

I assume you had been using an S1 layout, which LJ recently rebuilt from scratch & then frelled site-wide with notorious Release 88.

I had thought it was an S2 layout when I picked it, but it is possible that I was misremembering. One of the chief reasons I picked it is because it had a three column layout available, and when I went to try and fix what was broken, my same-old same-old style only offered one and two column possibilities. *sigh* I liked my old style and was in no hurry to change it. I found it quite readable.

Release 88 deserves its notoriety. What a...

I'm going to be polite and leave it at that.

Yeah, Release 88. I've been trying to fortify myself emotionally before making an official announcement to the comm I moderate regarding the future of fannish activity on LJ. It's hard for me to remain diplomatic & neutral when a place where I find joy through online social interaction is threatened by the very service provider of that medium.

I've made a lot of friends on LJ, and it saddens me to see fandom dispersed & fractured because of one exec's poor corporate business decision.
Dec. 26th, 2011 07:30 am (UTC)
Yeah. I know just what you mean. I don't have any responsibility for any comms, and I have a permanent account, so most of the changes aren't as bad for me as they are for so many others.

I keep hoping that the level of discontent clearly expressed, and the way that this whole situation is turning into a vast bonanza for DW will prompt LJ to rethink and retreat, but then again I understand that part of Daniel that keeps expecting the best out of humanity, even after the life he's led, because I do that too. I will not be surprised, but very saddened if, as looks more and more likely, they don't learn from this BIG mistake.

Hey, thanks so much for the birthday wishes...my family knows better than to wrap my gifts in Christmas wrapping! Actually, my sister thought it would be hilarious to go with a Disney princess theme this year. It's hilarious because I am decidedly *not* a Disney princess fan (never was--had a thing for Power Rangers instead, lol). I live and work a couple hours away from the family so I couldn't see them on Tues, we ended up waiting to do my birthday on Sat and Christmas on Sun...a nice back-to-back gift-giving event for me!

Anyway, sounds like things were enjoyable with your family! Hope you have a great new year!
