A meme stolen from draco_somnians wherein I answer somewhat random questions, largely about myself.

1. ONE OF YOUR SCARS, HOW DID YOU GET IT?
When I was in Nursery School, I wanted to play The Lone Ranger (and take the starring role). The other kids wanted to play house. I was the smallest kid. They wanted me to be the baby, and forceably picked me up and put me in the baby carriage, which was a sheet-metal affair designed for dolls instead of flailing, fighting 3 year olds. My mother was called out of her college class to come and get me, so I could be stitched. She came, and there I was with a 1 cm. length not too deep gash on my right forearm. She suggested a Band-aidTM. The staff were aghast. It would show when I was a debutante and had my "come out"! My mother doubled up in laughter and it took her a while to recover enough to explain that I was not likely to ever be a debutante. They reluctantly administered the Band-aidTM.

2. WHAT IS ON THE WALLS IN YOUR ROOM?
Bookcases. True of many of our available walls. Oh, and an off-white paint. I favor white walls and dark trim. My children know from this that I am a fogey, and very boring.

3. DO YOU SNORE, GRIND YOUR TEETH, OR TALK IN YOUR SLEEP?
Nope. Well, I suppose everyone snores if they sleep on their backs with a bad cold, but otherwise? No.

4. WHAT TYPE OF MUSIC DO YOU LISTEN TO?
Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Folk, Greek, Arabic, and Rock n' Roll, through recent stuff. I'm a sucker for harmony. My favorite Classical composer is Handel. I love Steeleye Span. I'll skirt the edge of Country, but won't really go there. I'm basically Jazz-deaf. I understand why others love it, but generally don't go for it much myself.

5. WHAT TIME WERE YOU BORN?
10:30 (give or take a minute) a.m. I was a polite baby. My mother had 1 1/2 hours of labor with me. I'm her first.

6. WHAT DO YOU WANT MORE THAN ANYTHING RIGHT NOW?
For my children to achieve their goals in life and be happy on the way, and for my husband and I to live long, healthy lives and go quickly together in our sleep, so that we are never separated. I don't ask for much, do I?

7. WHAT DO YOU MISS?
Being able to eat whatever I want to eat. I'm a diabetic, and I've had a heart attack, and to do that would be to choose a nasty form of death by inches and slow decay. So, not going to happen.

8. WHAT IS YOUR MOST PRIZED POSSESSION(S)?
A few things that I've inherited from my grandparents, who are gone now, the family pictures, some favorite childhood books, and Bun-Bun. I've had Bun-Bun since I was 3. He's a long-limbed Steiff rabbit.

9. HOW TALL ARE YOU?
5'1 1/2 ". I used to be 5'1 3/4", but I guess I've been teaching swimming too long, and I've shrunk.

10. DO YOU GET CLAUSTROPHOBIC?
Nope.

11. DO YOU GET SCARED IN THE DARK?
Not since I was eight.

12. THE LAST PERSON TO MAKE YOU CRY?
My fourteen year old (not that she will ever know it). Kids can say really cruel things without realizing how deeply words can cut. And ultimately she didn't really mean what she said. She was just trying to hurt me because she was angry, and I was there.

13. WHAT’S YOUR WORST FEAR?
Losing my husband or one of my kids. As far as phobias go, I don't like heights.

14. WHAT KIND OF HAIR/EYE COLOR DO YOU LIKE ON THE OPPOSITE SEX?
I like the cliché of "tall, dark, and handsome" with a side order of lean. My husband is a lean 6'1" with dark (now greying) so-brown-it's-almost-black hair, and blue eyes. So I'm gonna hafta say blue here, but really I'm not picky about eye color. As a matter of fact, I never found blue eyes attractive, until I fell into his. The only physical characteristic I wanted one of our kids to inherit was his blue eyes, and our first kid got 'em. All pressure was off for our son!

15. WHERE CAN YOU SEE YOURSELF PROPOSING?
It really mattered to my husband to have the honor of proposing to me, and the moment is one of my most treasured memories, so I wouldn't change a thing. My dad had just finished asking us to look at the societal pressures on me to subsume myself to the marriage that would result from being a married woman, versus the differing pressures to put emphasis on self and career if I were unmarried, and had asked (rather plaintively) if we would not "consider just living together for a while, and not rush into things?" and gone to bed. We were still sitting together on the living room couch, and he turned to me and said "Will you marry me?" I said "Yes". And then there was hugging. And kissing. And more hugging. And maybe a tear or two, at the corner of the eyes. And happy wobbly smiles. Others have fancier, more romantic, cuter, or more elaborate stories, but I like mine just the way it was.

We came down the next morning, and I said "Dad, we're engaged." He looked me over, smiled, and said "I'm glad. I just wanted you to make the choice for the right reasons, and I'm sure you did." Then he welcomed my (now) husband into the family. We were (just barely) 21.

16. COFFEE OR ENERGY DRINK?
Coffee. I like coffee, the darker the roast the better.

17. FAVORITE PIZZA TOPPING?
Hamburger and mushroom and onion (together). Not that I can eat pizza these days.

18. IF YOU COULD EAT ANYTHING RIGHT NOW, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Right now, a mocha shake. Ask me another time, and it would change.

19. FAVORITE COLOR OF ALL TIME?
Not-pink. In general I like strong colors and jewel tones, but context matters

20. HAVE YOU EVER EATEN A GOLDFISH?
No. Unless carp - the kind that's at least a foot long - served in Chinese restaurants counts.

21. WHAT WAS THE FIRST MEANINGFUL GIFT YOU EVER RECEIVED?
Life.

22. DO YOU HAVE A CRUSH?
It's lasted since I was 19. I married him. He can still make me feel that way. Aren't I sickening?

23. ARE YOU DOUBLE JOINTED?
Yup.

24. FAVORITE CLOTHING BRAND?
What ever is comfy and flatters. I'm more jeans and t-shirt than haute couture. I do have a favorite denim jacket from the Gap. It's very plain though, and I'm sure I could find the same thing made by someone else and like it just as much.

25. WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE FEMALE/MALE CELEBRITY?
Meh. Don't really function that way. If I like a show/song/movie I tend to read anything I come across having to do with that (I'm a fast reader and can afford to be voracious that way), but I tend to feel that I'll never really know them as real people, so having favorites is kind of pointless. That said, I'm kind of a sucker for Pete Seeger's deep-seated belief that he can bring on change, and social justice, and the perfection of the human race through song and protest. He keeps on believing it and working for it, in spite of the way the world keeps on spinning in its wicked ways. I wish I could be that unquenchably optimistic.

26. DO YOU HAVE A PET RIGHT NOW?
Two cats. I've had a dog, goats, a sheep, a rooster. The last three species listed became dinner, although I was vegetarian those nights.

27. WHAT KIND IS IT?
A seal point Siamese, and a half-Siamese/half-Abyssinian, who looks whole Abyssinian because those traits are dominant. But the Siamese clearly has some non-purebred genetics, because she meows like a Tabby. The Abyssinian yowls like a proper Siamese.

28. WOULD YOU FALL IN LOVE KNOWING THAT THE PERSON IS LEAVING?
I gave my heart to my middle daughter when she was our foster child, knowing that she might not become free for adoption. So yeah.

30. SAY A NUMBER FROM ONE TO A HUNDRED?
Thirteen.

31. BLONDES OR BRUNETTES?
Dark hair for men I will be attracted to. Otherwise? All hair colors have their beauties, and I like people best with the hair color they came with.

32. FAVORITE QUOTE?
In mourning or rejoicing, be not far from me.
-Ancient Egyptian Love Poem

33. FAVORITE PLACE?
Keene Valley, New York (where I spent my summers as a child) or in the shelter of my husband's arms.

34. HAVE YOU BEEN OUT OF THE USA?
Yes. Canada, Paris, Greece, Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine

35. WEAKNESSES?
My besetting sins are Wrath, Sloth, and Gluttony.

What happened to 36?
Since 42 is busy being WHAT DO YOU GET COMPLIMENTED ABOUT THE MOST, 36 is filling in as the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything, until 42 can resume its rightful role.

37. FIRST JOB?
Swim Instructor/Lifeguard. I still do this in July.

38. EVER DONE A PRANK CALL?
I've stood there listening in as friends made them. Does that count?

39. DO YOU THINK EVERYONE OUT THERE HAS A SOULMATE?
No, I think that there are people out there whose lives have been so damaging that they are no longer capable of making that kind of bond with another. My middle daughter's birth mother was like that.

40. WHAT WERE YOU DOING BEFORE YOU FILLED THIS OUT?
Filling out a travel insurance claim form for my daughter's trip to France that was canceled due to the volcano.

41. HAVE YOU EVER HAD SURGERY?
Yes. To put a plate in my right index finger which was closed in a van door. Those not in the know wouldn't be able to tell now.

42. WHAT DO YOU GET COMPLIMENTED ABOUT MOST?
My intelligence. It used to bother me, since I didn't do a damn thing to earn it, other than choosing my parents wisely, but then I figured out that plenty of other things that people get complimented on are like that.

43. HAVE YOU EVER HAD BRACES?
Yup. At the end of treatment my orthodontist called in others to see, and showed off my before and after plaster impressions, and pointed out that I had the worst case of "bunny teeth" he'd ever treated. No one would suspect that now.

44. WHAT DO YOU WANT FOR YOUR BIRTHDAY?
I just had my birthday. I get a rest from thinking about such things until November when my family will start asking me for my Christmas list.

45. HOW MANY KIDS DO YOU WANT AND THEIR NAMES?
I have 4. My first is named after her 3-greats grandmother and is called by a form of that name that is the feminine form of one of my brother's unusual name, My son is named after both his grandfathers, My middle daughter came already named, but we gave her an Arabic first name to honor my step-father who helped to raise me, and to say that families are formed in all kinds of ways, and my youngest is named after one of my grandmothers. In all cases, we both liked the names (my eldest daughter had a story to go with the name) as well as the people.

46. WERE YOU NAMED AFTER ANYONE?
My first name is my paternal grandfather's mother's last name, and one child in each generation has bourne that name. My youngest daughter has it for a middle name. My middle name is also my paternal grandmother's middle name. She was from Virginia and always went by her first and middle names as a unit. I don't use either of those names, except on paper. My unusual nickname is what came out when I tried to say my first name as a kid (WTF? They don't even start with the same letter, and they end differently!), but I think it might not have stuck if it weren't for the fact that my maternal grandmother's favorite aunt had that name as a nickname

47. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST TURN OFF OF THE OPPOSITE SEX?
Lack of basic personal hygiene is the biggest turn off in any sex!

48. WHAT IS ONE THING YOU LIKED ABOUT HIGH SCHOOL?
Getting out of there. There were some good teachers, and some fine friends, but so much was painful and awkward, and there was too much pressure not to be myself. Smart girls were frightening and to be discouraged somehow. If I'd studied Jack O'Neill as an example, I might have been happier there.

49. WHAT KIND OF SHAMPOO DO YOU USE?
Right now? L'Oreal Vive, but I'm not particularly loyal or attached.

50. DO YOU LIKE YOUR HANDWRITING?
It's okay. It's not beautiful, but it's me.

51. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LUNCH MEAT?
Roast beef. I treat myself once or twice a year after trimming all - and I mean all - visible fat.

52. ANY BAD HABITS?
I umm...kinda chew almost on my tongue when I'm anxious. Weird, huh? And it looks funny. I don't know where I picked it up, and I'm trying to stop.

And sometimes when I get passionate about something I interrupt. That's RUDE!

53. ARE YOU A JEALOUS PERSON?
No. I tend to figure that if I actually got to be the other person, it wouldn't fit me, and I'd want to be me again. And my husband is the most loyal husband ever so I don't ever have cause to be that kind of jealous.

54. IF YOU WERE ANOTHER PERSON, WOULD YOU BE FRIENDS WITH YOU?
I hope so. I try to be cheerful, friendly, and welcoming, although I'm shy by nature.

55. DO YOU AGREE WITH FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS?
If it suits the people involved. It wouldn't suit me. If I'm going to do that with someone, there'd better be strong feelings of love and attachment on both sides.

56. DO LOOKS MATTER?
Oh, I wish I could say no, and for friendship, absolutely they don't. My husband is tall, and slender, and handsome, and I'm not sure that I would have given him a first look, let alone a second if he hadn't been. I'd love him now even if he were horribly disfigured, but we've known each other for 33 years now!

57. HOW DO YOU RELEASE ANGER?
I get moving. I "make loud points". I growl. I frown. Kind of like Jack O'Neill, without the scary tall guy, special ops., male thing to back it up.

58.WOULD YOU RATHER GAIN 58 POUNDS OR LOSE 58 POUNDS.
In general, since I'm not svelte yet, even after losing 95 lbs., I would tend to say lose, but if I lost 58 lbs, I'd be dead of anorexia long before I got there, so I'm gonna hafta say "gain".

59. WHAT’S YOUR MAIN GOAL IN LIFE?
To try and leave the world a better place for my having been here, and take as much joy in the living as I can.

60. WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE TOY AS A CHILD?
Bun-bun. The bouncy horse my daughter is riding in my default icon. My grandmother's block set. Tinkertoy. Hot wheels.

61. HOW MANY NUMBERS ARE IN YOUR CELL PHONE?
I don't have one. I'd have to drive 5 miles into town to get reception.

62.WERE YOU A FAN OF BARNEY AS A LITTLE KID?
Barney wasn't out until my kids were kids. I liked the Lone Ranger, and Mighty Mouse. President Kennedy annoyed me by getting assassinated and preempting my cartoons. He'd already earned my wrath by preempting them for press conferences. BORING!

Please don't stone me. I was little. I feel badly about it now.

63. DO YOU USE SARCASM?
Sh'yeah. Like I'd do that!

64. MASHED POTATOES OR MACARONI AND CHEESE?
Mac and cheese today if it were homemade. Mashed spuds another day. I like both.

65. WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN A GUY/GIRL?
A sense of humor, intelligence, kindness. Musicality is nice. But kindness and a sense of humor are the non-negotiable demands.

66. WHAT ARE YOUR NICKNAMES?
I only have the one. It's unique enough that I'd prefer not to share.

67. FAVORITE SUPER POWER?
Fly...No!...Breathe under water...No!...Fly...

68. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE TV SHOW?
Currently? SG-1. Duh. Experience has shown this will change...eventually.

69.WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO DEAL WITH YOUR ENEMIES?
Be fair and polite, and treat them as you would want to be treated. Who knows. Maybe they can be converted.

70. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ICE CREAM FLAVOR?
Ben and Jerry's Coffee Toffee Crunch.

71. DO YOU HAVE ALL YOUR FINGERS AND TOES?
Yup. The right index finger has added internal structure (see # 41), but they're all present, accounted for, and functional.

72. DO YOU HAVE A COMPUTER IN YOUR ROOM?
Two desktop PCs in the Computer room, a desktop in the living room, and an aged arthritic Mac from c. 1993 in the library. But in my bedroom? Nope. Although my husband is a very quick calculator.

73. PLANS FOR TONIGHT?
Finish this? Preferably before dawn.

74. WHERE DO YOU WANT TO LIVE WHEN YOU ARE OLDER?
Right here. I love living in the country. I'm a pack rat. Moving would be hard work.

75. DO YOU WANT EVERYONE TO ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS?
Only if they want to do it. That said, I'm as nosy as the next person.

76. WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO?
The burbling of the stream, and the peeping of the frogs.

77. LAST THING YOU DRANK?
Water.

78. LAST PERSON YOU TALKED TO ON THE PHONE?
My husband, to tell him that I hadn't fallen off the face of the Earth, that my errands had run long, but that he should wait to cook the fish I was bringing home, instead of defrosting something.

79. THE FIRST THING YOU NOTICE IN THE OPPOSITE SEX?
Hands and eyes. And body type.

80. WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME?
Read. Swim. Exercise outdoors. Spend time with family. Pet pets. Write. Play/sing music. Listen to music. Read some more. Spend time with my hus-...That's private!

81. FAVORITE THING TO HATE?
NASCAR and pro-wrestling? Televised Golf? I don't mind if others like it.

And I really do hate child or animal abuse as well as racism, sexism, and bigotry, but really, isn't that kind of a minimum requirement?

82. FAVORITE SEASON OF THE YEAR?
I like them all, but the passing of summer makes me saddest, because I know it will be a long time before I can be so free in my clothing again.

83. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE TYPE OF CANDY?
Chocolate. There's another kind?

84. HAVE YOU EVER REALLY AND TRULY HAD A BEST FRIEND?
Yes. And the very best of them I married.

85. WHAT IS YOUR HAIR COLOR?
It used to be so dark brown that people insisted it was black, but now it is greying, and some of what hasn't greyed isn't as dark as it once was.

86. EYE COLOR?
Hazel. People who don't look carefully say brown, when I ask them to look closely, they say "Oh, actually they're mostly green, aren't they?" I had blue eyes until I was two, and green eyes until I was four, when they went hazel. Delayed eye color runs in the family.

87. SHOE SIZE?
6 (U.S. Womens) 4.5 (British, and U.S. Boys) 37 (European)

88. FAVORITE FAST FOOD PLACE?
Ummm... Chili's? Not that I love the place, but I can get their chicken and shrimp fajitas with no cheese and no sour cream, and be full and still within my diet.

89. FAVORITE RESTAURANT?
Pauline's in Burlington. The food is to die for, but I can't eat it nowadays. I liked the Afghan Home Restaurant in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and I love the soup dumplings at Joe's Shanghai in Manhattan's Chinatown.

90. DO YOU LIKE SUSHI?
Some. I kind of prefer my fish cooked.

91. WATCH TV TODAY?
Of course. The Stanley Cup playoffs are on these days. (NHL hockey)

92. FAVORITE DAY OF THE YEAR?
May Day?

93. PLAY ANY MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS?
Guitar, flute, a smidge of piano. All of them fairly badly. My musical training consists of a year and a half of soprano recorder lessons. Now that I can play. I sing. Some choirboy somewhere is missing his voice, because I'm using it.

94. REPUBLICAN OR DEMOCRAT?
Democrat.

95. KISSES OR HUGS?
Why can't I have BOTH? [whines.........flounces] Oh, alright, FINE! Hugs. Happy now?

96. RELATIONSHIPS OR ONE NIGHT STANDS?
Relationships. It stands to reason that the person who still worries about the stray kittens we took to the humane society when I was 8 (I'm 52, and they've been dead a loooong time now) would not be psychologically suited to the one night stand.

97. WHAT WAS THE LAST THING YOU BOUGHT?
The groceries for this week. How dull and grown-up-ish!

98. WOULD YOU EVER BE A HOUSEWIFE?
I always swore, "No!", but we didn't want the children raised by the hired help, and my husband works 70 hour weeks. So here I am. But if you saw my house you'd realize that my efforts are more in the raising the children than winning the Good Housekeeper award. And my parents raised me to know better. Bad Thothmes.

99. WHAT BOOK ARE YOU READING?
Only one? Only one? Okay, I'm putting a rush on finishing Our Magnificent Bastard Tongue, The Untold History of English by John McWhorter (my birthday gift from my Dad) because my daughter wants me to bring it down so she can borrow it when we see her at the end of the month. I like historical novels, romances (both literary and trashy-provided-they're-historical), mysteries, humor, kid lit, fantasy, sci. fi. with good characterization, scholarly tomes on the ancient world, and a wide range of other stuff.

100. DESCRIBE YOUR LOVE LIFE:
Blessed. I will never quite understand what the man of my dreams sees in me, but he does, and he is everything I desire. And I somehow make him very happy. Some people live their entire lives without finding what we have had for 32 years now. Our 30th wedding anniversary is on the 13. I must have suffered horribly in a past life to earn this!

I won't say my life doesn't have its struggles, because it does, but I really believe that the more thankful we are for what we have, the more blessed our lives become, because we see more of the good when we focus on it.

Any yes, I am one of the fortunate, and as far as I can tell, I did nothing special to acheive this. I'm just lucky, I guess.

Well, I suppose I could lie like a rug and introduce you to a fictitious person, but what would be the point? Besides, then I'd have to keep remembering to look back and make sure I didn't contradict any of the fictitious answers I posted. *shudders*

I'll look forward to seeing your answers when you get the time...ehm...Will that be this year? :)

This is awesome and I very much enjoyed reading it. I'm now quite tempted to do this meme instead of getting back to the work letter I'm supposed to be writing...maybe I'll just work on it sporadically throughout the day.
